Christmas the Buccaneer Way

HHS held its 2013 Beta Club-sponsored “Christmas the Buccaneer Way” benevolence drive during December.  Faculty/staff/students and the community were invited to donate money or nonperishable food items.  Mrs. Vallette Weaver’s classes issued to the other classes a “canned food challenge” that was well-received.  Several faculty/staff members also donated Wal-Mart or Brookshire’s gift cards.  Total monetary donations this year were $1265, including a $350 community donation.  Thanks to the Haughton Brookshire’s staff and manager Oliver Warren for their assistance, including delivering nine grocery baskets of food items to HHS.  HHS Beta Club students sorted and packed after school one day and delivered after school the next.  Twenty-two families were able to be helped this year; each family included at least one student at Haughton High.  These students also received a shirt or a sweatshirt, courtesy of the school’s “uniform” fund (from the sales of shirts in the HHS Library).  Between the “Christmas the Buccaneer Way” drive and the jean day fundraiser to help defray expenses incurred by the family of Chris Pennell, a Buc who succumbed to a heart infection in November, Haughton High raised a total of $5,265 in benevolence funds during four weeks.
